Everything around us in the natural world makes sound.
Wind, rain, people breathing, traffic, airplanes, cars, stereos, cats, dogs.. Sound is energy. Energy moving in air. We just happen to have two very sensitive ears that can sense this energy moving on air and convert it into meaningful things we can understand.
Acoustics is the science of that energy.
It is a study of what nature takes for granted every day. Sound is with us 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Our hearing is always on, it never stops. When we sleep, our hearing is still on, while our sight turns off. Perhaps it’s a way to keep us safe, in case we hear something dangerous while sleeping, a way to warn us of danger. Whatever the reason, nature made it important enough to be on all the time. This means we have more practice hearing than seeing. If we train our brains correctly it’s possible to “see” things with our ears like radar.
We use auditory cues to live, to survive, to thrive, all day, every day. Every day things like phones ringing, a friend’s voice, a barking dog. And subtler things that help us evolve: the sound of our breath during yoga, our heartbeats during meditation, wind in the trees. We learn these cues in the experience of living, and they become part of our everyday world.
The entire entertainment industry is based on sight and sound. They are the two primary senses we use to tell stories and convery them in a meaningful way. They are also the two primary senses we use to understand our world.
Our focus is to understand Sound. Understand the science behind the nature of sound. To use that knowledge to improve the quality of human lives. To grow in that knowledge and be open to new ideas and new discoveries: the measureable, the un-measureable, and the unknown: the science of the future.
Everything changes and everything evolves. Without change and evolution, we would still be living in the dark ages.
